How long will it take to re-pipe a 40-suite building?
Usually from 5 to 7 weeks.

How long is the water shut down?
In a typical building you would have 2 days of total building water shut down from approximately 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM.

Do the residents have to move out during the re-piping process?
No, not at all, the work takes place while the residents occupy their suites.

Will the re-pipe interfere with the heating or sprinkler system?
No, there is no need to shut off the heat or the sprinkler system.

What materials are installed in the water pipe system?
Wirsbo Aquapex® piping has proven to display excellent corrosion resistance and good long term performance, and offer long term warranties.  Type “K” copper is often used in sizes of 2 ½” to 4” as Wirsbo Aquapex® is only manufactured to 2” in diameter.

How long will the new piping system last?
The piping systems of today have major improvements compared with the original systems. The sizing of the piping has increased significantly, this has reduced the velocity (speed) as the water travels through the pipes which in turn reduces the friction and wear factor of the pipes. The new piping systems require certified piping to ensure the manufacturing process and materials used are of the highest standard.  Copper piping is now available in type K which has a wall thickness that is approximately 20% thicker than regular copper pipe (type L).  As a result of these improvements you can expect your new type (K) copper water pipe system to last approximately 50-60 years.  In wood frame apartment buildings and high-rise buildings as well approximately 80% of all piping used is Wirsbo Aquapex ® and Wirsbo is saying that their products are expected to last up to 100 years.

Are there any other benefits from re-piping?
Yes, the new plumbing codes require shut off valves to be installed to each riser, thereby allowing small groups of suites to have their water shut off rather than the entire building.  These valves are usually located in the common corridor in a conveniently located access panel.  Many buildings have undersized original piping or an inadequate hot water circulation system which can contribute to temperature fluctuations and this issue is addressed with a re-pipe.

Is there a certain time of year that you shouldn't re-pipe?
No, because a re-pipe will not affect the heating system, a building can be re-piped at any time of the year.

How receptive are residents to the re-piping process?
The residents are generally receptive when a professional contractor who has informed them well carries out the work because the level of inconvenience is negligible, particularly if the resident works away from their home during the daytime.
