There are several different types of pipe that are approved for use in a potable water piping system. Wirsbo Aquapex® and copper are the two materials generally used. Wirsbo Aquapex® is manufactured in sizes of 1/2” to 2” and this is the material of choice. When larger diameter piping is required over 2” in size then copper tube is usually used. There are two types of approved copper pipe, type “L” and type “K”. Type “K” has approximately 20% thicker wall thickness as compared to type “L”.
There are several approved products that can be used in a potable domestic water pipe system. Copper piping is usually used for most new piping installations 2" in diameter and larger as plastic Wirsbo Aquapex® piping is only made to 2" diameter. However copper piping is manufactured from ½" to 4" in diameter. There are 2 types of copper approved for use type "L" and type "K" which has a wall thickness approximately 25% thicker than type "L".
The BC Plumbing codes states that a third party such as Warnock-Hersey shall certify all copper and Wirsbo Aquapex® piping. The certification process ensures that all piping is manufactures to a standard as set forth in the in the plumbing code. There are only two manufacturers in North America who produce certified piping. A properly installed copper and/or copper and Wirsbo Aquapex® piping system should provide many years of trouble free performance.
Wirsbo Aquapex® piping is a plastic cross linked piping system.
